Juice Fasting – Have You Tried It?

Category : juice fasts

My latest foray into losing the last 15 pounds of weight is to try juice fasting.  I have not given up solid food altogether, but I am drinking a glass of green juice two to three times a day.  I also mix it with my fruit smoothies for added energy.

I really like the taste of Green Goodness from Bolthouse Farms.  It is green and a little on the thick side, but it takes a lot of fresh apple juice.  It has healthy fruits and vegetables already in it like wheat grass, spinach, apples, kiwi, bananas, and dragon fruit.  Another good green juice for juice fasting is Odwalla’s Green Superfood.  Again, if you can get past the deep green color of the drink, it is good for you.

I had to laugh a couple of weeks ago at the grocery store, the woman bagging my groceries noticed the green juice and asked me how I could drink it, she said that she just could not get past the color.  I told her to try mixing into a smoothie, and my secret is to add a little bit of sherbet to the mix.  I don’t think that I convinced her, but it was kind of fun to share a little healthy conversation.

I have to admit that I have been really lazy about my three mile walks on the treadmill every night.  I have been walking back and forth to the store, but that’s only a mile or two at best.  I also made a really big candy basket over Easter, and the chocolate has been a big temptation.  I have managed to gain about ten pounds, and I am ready to lose it again by getting back to my old routine, and adding this juice fast.   Read more about how I lost 15 pounds in three weeks.

Juice fasting is supposed to be healthy for a couple of days, and I was reading over at Livestrong that juice fasting to lose weight is possible, but longer fasting periods is really not recommended.  You can read more about fasting with juice here: http://www.livestrong.com/juice-fasting-to-lose-weight/

Get Rid Of Love Handles With A Muffin Top Workout

Category : get rid of love handles

This is a really good exercise video that demonstrates how to get rid of muffin top and love handles with a muffin top workout. Tonya shows you how to workout with a medicine ball. I have never really thought of using a medicine ball, but because they are weighted and very similar to kettle bells, they are excellent for building strength around your core. Medicine balls are excellent for toning your abs and obliques.

I particularly like the exercise where she swings the medicine back and forth, focusing on the core muscles. They also help you to develop some good core strength which is excellent for getting a flatter, more defined stomach. I imagine that if you were to pair a medicine ball workout with about 45 minutes of cardio training, you might have a winning workout combination for blasting that muffin top.

Why Safe Weight Loss Should Be Your Top Priority

Category : safe weight loss

Safe weight loss is extremely important when you begin a diet and exercise plan.

You always want to take your time and do things in moderation.

Extreme weight loss programs are never good for your health, and the goal should be to lose weight and keep it off for the long term.

As a teen, I loved to dance.  I danced in school, and at home.  I also felt the pressure to compete with other girls, and I would skip meals to be lighter on my feet.  I would also do aerobics for almost 3 hours a day, five times a week.

I am 5’8″ tall, and I barely weighed 110 pounds back them.  I was scary skinny, and every added pressure would cause me to lose that much more weight.  This was not safe weight loss, and had anyone close to me realized what I was doing to my body, I probably would have gotten hospitalized.

When I first started planning a diet and exercise program for myself this year, I would try to listen to my body.  If I was craving something sweet, I would reach for a piece of fruit, or some frozen berries.

If I had to have some fried food, I would bake some panko breaded onion rings.  You don’t have to deprive yourself of anything.  You simply have to make smarter choices with food and exercise.

In my mid-twenties, I went into the opposite direction.  I was unhappy in my personal and professional life, and I would overeat and not exercise at all.  I ended up 40 pounds overweight for years, and even more unhappy about my body.

Lately, I have been guilty of listening to those close to me about my own weight loss.  Comments like, you are getting so thin, or you shouldn’t lose any more weight are messages that I simply don’t want or need to hear.

I know when I am feeling healthy and good about myself, and if others are starting to feel a little uncomfortable about my body, that is their issue, not mine.

It makes me uncomfortable, and often can send me into a pattern of old bad habits.  The truth is that even though I took off the holiday pounds by getting more cardio, I started to backslide because of the comments, and I ended up rehashing those negative comments over in my own mind.  I found that I had gained 5 pounds over the past few weeks.

I had indulged in a few family style dinners, and on my birthday, I drank a little too much wine….disastrous for my waistline.

It also gave me a killer hangover the next morning.  You can read my thoughts on alcohol and weight loss here.

Yesterday, I started my old habits of cereal, a smoothie, and a healthy dinner along with 3 miles on the treadmill at night.  I also walked to the grocery store, so that was another few miles to the good.

So, my point is to know inside what you are feeling.  Don’t feel pressured by those around you to indulge in things that are going to take away from your goals.  It is more important to experience safe weight loss, and take every day as it comes.

Emotional Eating – Ways To Stop The Madness

Category : emotional eating

When it comes to emotional eating, I have been on both sides of the fence.  Emotional eating is a state where if you are experiencing negative emotions, you have a tendency to overeat.

Some people are just the opposite where they overindulge when times are good, and they are feeling good or comfortable.  I have done both, and either way, your waistline pays the price.

I don’t watch much television, but there is a program on MTV where I found myself hoping the star would find her voice, and become happy in her life.

Chelsea Settles is a reality based show about a young woman venturing out into the world.  She is in her early twenties, with a wonderful personality, but she suffers with weight issues, and self esteem.

I find the show fascinating, and being that I survived my twenties, I find myself talking to the tv, reassuring her and hoping that she will fulfill her dreams.

To date, she has lost over 100 pounds, and she is bubbly with self confidence.  What a great success story!  She spoke to US Weekly about her recent weight loss.

“I started to eat for the right reasons — for fuel — not because I was bored or emotional. I’d never really believed I could change. But as soon as I visualized what I’d look like if I did and stopped making excuses, change happened.”

I think that it is critical to first begin with your emotions.  Learn positive ways to deal with pain, sadness, depression, and even the space that is comfort.  You have to express your emotions, and not suppress them.  Take each new day to build on your self confidence.  Work from the inside, and focus on the good in you.

I meditate a lot, and I pray too.  Both are very useful for calming yourself down, and finding your center.  I also speak my mind.  I have found that there is a big difference between expressing negative emotions, and standing up for yourself.

If you don’t like confrontation, don’t worry.  Simply begin by examining your thoughts, and practice being present in the moment.  Quiet the anger or sadness with deep breathing.  Step back from the situation that is troubling you.  Realize that emotional eating will only add to your problems later on.  Go for a walk, take up kickboxing, or try yoga.

Once you have found your voice, use it.  You deserve to be heard.  Your weight loss success story begins with you, and you can do it!
